SESE

All the classes in school have their own little plots to plant and cultivate and these house both flowers and vegetables. The image browser on the left shows our 6th class planting out some bulbs last spring under the guidance of their teacher......enjoy the photos!

Chess

Many of the pupils at our school enjoy learning and playing chess. From 1st class, the children are encouraged to participate while some of the junior pupils look on. It is one of the favourite "rainy day" lunchtime activities. We run our own chess league. We also challenge local schools to friendly games and our school chess teams partcipate in the local chess championships. The slideshow on the left shows photos of our pupils and those of Knockcommon N. S. participating in friendly challenges.

Literacy; Buddy Reading

The senior students in the school really enjoy sharing their reading skills with the juniors. Buddy reading helps the juniors to enjoy participating in the reading of their chosen stories with the support and companionship of the seniors. The image browser on the left shows third class engaging junior infants in reading in the G.P. room and on sunny days, in the yard.

Maths; A Practical Approach

The images on the right show two fifth class students putting their knowledge of measurement to good practical use as they measure up the library walls for the purchase of picture rail for these walls. They are also measuring the length and width of the playground with a trundle wheel to work out the area of their playing space.

Art; Looking and Responding

There is a section of wallspace in the hall dedicated to the "Looking and Responding" strand of the Visual Arts programme. The photo on the left shows two of our very talented Senior Infants with paintings they produced in response to the image on the wall behind them which was their inspiration. These paintings were made by the Senior Infants using only the 3 primary colours and white.
