Our "Green School" Committee
Set up in February '07, our first "Green School" Committee worked hard on recycling to help us achieve our first Green Flag. Earlier this school year, 2009, a new committee was formed, (see photo on left.) There are 12 pupils and 5 adults on the committee. They are anxious that we achieve our second green flag and to this end an Energy Policy was drawn up. The school's Energy motto is;
"Scoil Mhuire C
Is the place to be
Because we save
On ENERGY"
Keeping Our School Green
We were awarded the first Green Flag for great efforts in keeping our school clean, green and litter free. However, we now have an ENERGY policy and we have school monitors who ensure lights and electrical equipment are turned off when not in use, that doors are kept closed to conserve heat, that windows are not open where radiators are on and that blinds are closed on cold evenings. All classes are making great efforts to cut down on the energy their classroom uses throughout the day.

Visit to the Wind Turbine at DKIT
On Tuesday, 21st March, 4th class went to find out more about the production of Green Energy by visiting the wind turbine which powers 50% of DKIT's annual energy consumption. This is the equivalent of supplying power to 400 average homes per year! The turbine, built in 2005, is 60m tall with a roter diameter of 52m. Ray was the friendly and informative guide for the tour and 4th class learned a lot from their trip.
