Welcome to the school website of Sandpit N.S.(Scoil Náisiúnta Muire gan Smál), Newhouse, Sandpit, Drogheda, Co. Louth.
Situated in Sandpit in the beautiful Louth countryside, we are a school of some 212 pupils, our principal, 17 teachers, 9 SNAs, our secretary and our caretaker.
Our school first opened its doors in 1956, having moved from its previous location a short distance up the road where it had been since the 1830s.
Since then, our school has grown immensely, moving from a two teacher to a three teacher school in the early 1980s.
Then in the 1990s and 2000s, many more staff and pupils came on board and the school has been extended 4 times since 1995.
We are very proud of our school building and the facilities we have available to our children. Each classroom is equipped with an interactive whiteboard.
We have a set of chrome books for school use and updated our wi-fi access.
We have a state of the art school hall which is used for many activities including sport, concerts, meetings, school assembly, bazaars to name but a few.
At the back of the school, we have a large playground with a basketball court and a football pitch.
We were awarded our Amber Flag last year. Mr McEvoy and Mrs McGuinness worked extremely hard along with the committee. This is something we will continue to promote and work on as a whole school.
We are working towards our 7th Green Flag for Global Citizenship - Energy. We are always planting different flowers and taking part in litter picking in the area to ensure Sandpit is looking well. We are working on a bug hotel too. We already have a number of raised beds and an outdoor classroom in this area as well as a beautiful courtyard area in the heart of the school. We will also be paying special attention to recycling to see if we can further improve this. We are in the process of looking into solar panels at the minute.
In 2023 we achieved our second Active Schools Flag. It was a wonderful achievement. On the back of this award, our Student Council along with Mr Reilly took a look at our Healthy Eating Policy. It has been updated and we are delighted with the continued effort being put in by our pupils and staff to ensure our children are healthy and active.
We are also blessed with a very dedicated, hard working staff and a most cooperative and supportive parent body.
We hope you enjoy our website. Feel free to browse its pages to find out more about our school and the activities that are going on here during the school year.
