Student Council Newsletter 1
March 2023
In February 2023 we set up our very own Student Council in our school under the guidance of Mr. Reilly.
Why was it set up?
A Student Council gives us as learners the opportunity to play an active role in decisions that affect us. We can plan and review the actions we have taken as well as taking responsibility for how things will happen.
We the students wanted a forum where we could share ideas that benefit everyone at school. It's a place where we can suggest ideas without being wrong or right.
Who represents our school on the student council?
We were elected by our classmates in a democratic vote to represent our class on the student council.
The Student Council is made up of members from 3rd. to 6the class. This group of children meet at least once every week and at these meetings they will have the opportunity to discuss and implement ideas that could help and improve our school.
Our ideas/ambitions for the near future:
After chatting to our classmates we created a list of 40 plus ideas on how to improve our school. All our ideas were valid, but we realised our goals needed to be realistic, so we narrowed our list down to the following,
How we became members of this student council?
Mr. Reilly came up the idea of setting up the Student Council in our school. He then explained what a student council was and how it works for the benefits of all students in our school.
Each class from 3rd to 6th voted for who they thought would represent their class well. We now have 14 amazing members to make sure our pupils voices are heard.
The results of the election were as follows:
We have 14 members; they are:
6th Class:
5th Class
4th Class
3rd Class
What we have achieved so far;
We may be a new committee but we have achieved many goals so far;
We are delighted with what we have achieved so far and we look forward to targeting our next set of goals in the last school term. Our Student Council will continue to make our school a wonderful place to be, where everyone’s voice is heard and valued.
Regards,
The Student Council, Sandpit School.

- More non-uniform days for charity events/helping others
- Set up a School paper/Student Council Newsletter
- To bring back Chess Club
- Less written homework in the last term and replace it with Active Homework
- Create Ukrainian signs to help our pupils from Ukraine
- Set up a Readathon “War of the Books”
- Set up Buddy Reading (Where one class reads to another)

What we have achieved so far;
We may be a new committee but we have achieved many goals so far;
- We have entered the boys’ and girls’ soccer FAI soccer blitz competition in Dundalk. We had a fantastic, fun, energetic day. One of the boy’s team got through to the semifinal day. Well done to all involved.
- We made Ukrainian signs for the classrooms to help our new Ukrainian pupils and to make me them feel more comfortable in their new surroundings.
- We had a non-uniform day to raise money for the people affected by the Earthquake in Turkey and Syria. We raised 1,576 euro.
- We had lots of socks day to raise money for Down Syndrome Ireland and our school raised over 600 euro.
- We are working closely with the Active Flag Committee in our school to help us achieve our Second Active Flag.
We are delighted with what we have achieved so far and we look forward to targeting our next set of goals in the last school term. Our Student Council will continue to make our school a wonderful place to be, where everyone’s voice is heard and valued.
